Gauchoball:
Baseball Analytics at
UC Santa Barbara

In the words of 1960s Pittsburgh Pirates legend Willie Stargell, “They give you a round bat, and they throw you a round ball, and then they tell you to hit it square.”

Stargell's quote conveys the simplicity of baseball, a straightforward game of see the ball, hit the ball, and run the bases. But over the past 40 years, this simplicity has given way to complexity. Beginning in the early 1980s, traditional approaches were upended as professional baseball embraced sabermetrics, the statistical analysis of baseball data to evaluate and compare player and team performance. Analysts now examine spin rates, exit velocities, and launch angles to provide teams with comprehensive insights and strategies for winning. To gain a competitive edge, savvy leaders across college and Major League Baseball have turned to technology, a frontier UCSB Baseball has pioneered over the last five seasons.

We delve into the history of sabermetrics, explore how these programs are utilized within UC Santa Barbara’s baseball operations, and examine the future of this high-level data analysis in college and Major League Baseball.
